What is STOTT PILATES®?

  • Series of exercises that develops the muscles that stabilize, align, and move the CORE (trunk) of the body
  • Originally invented by Joseph Pilates to help WW I  POW’s regain strength and mobility
  • Emphasis is placed on the CORE - the ABS, gluts, hamstrings and muscles of the back and pelvic area
  • STOTT PILATES® was refined to include ideas from exercise physiology, sports medicine, and physical therapy
  • Gentle on the joints.  Eliminates “Pounding” on the knees, spine and hips
  • Similar to Yoga poses with emphasis on breathing and elongating muscles, but more fluid and faster-paced than some forms of Yoga.  Both develop the “mind-body’ connection.
  • Instructor cues the breathing and movement and ensures proper postural alignment and motion
  • “Prep” exercises and modifications build up to the “full” exercise
  • Can be done on a MAT or on equipment such as the  REFORMER
  • Small equipment - weights, bands, and Fitness Circles can be added  to the workouts
  • Private sessions include Postural Analysis

Is Pilates for YOU?

  • Every exercise program is not suitable for every person.  But in general, regardless of your age, weight, shape or level of fitness, you can do Pilates!
  • As with any exercise routine, a doctor should be consulted before undertaking it.
  • Individual modifications (changes in how the exercise is performed) can be made for physical limitations
  • Repertoire is broken down into Essential, Intermediate and Advanced exercises
  • Simplification of movements (Preparatory or “Preps”) are practiced, in order to achieve the final exercise
  • Small equipment is used, sometimes to assist in recruiting muscles, sometimes to challenge the student
